Five of the best Newcastle United kits – featuring Keegan’s entertainers and Robson’s challengers

Newcastle fans have not had much to shout about lately with six straight defeats ensuring a miserable end to a difficult season.

Fortunately, the Toon Army are ninth and well clear of any relegation battle but the new away kit unveiled for next season, which is grey and dull, sums up the mood perfectly on Tyneside at the moment.

However, it was not always this way. United fans have witnessed some incredibly exciting teams in the past and on occasion they have worm some pretty nifty gear, too.

Newcastle home kit 1993-1995 – Click the arrow for more – A fondly remembered kit particularly as it had Newcastle Breweries' famous Blue Star emblazoned on the shirt. It was also one of the first strips worn during the brilliant 'Entertainers' era under Kevin Keegan.

This away kit is a Toon Army favourite, which actually resembles more of a rugby shirt. A classic worn when United infamously blew a 12 point lead over Manchester United to lose the Premier League title..

Newcastle home kit 1995-1997 – Click the arrow for more – The home equivalent of the previous shirt is possibly Newcastle's most famous. Worn by legends like Les Ferdinand and Alan Shearer as the Magpies twice finished runners-up in the Premier League.

Newcastle home kit 2001-2003 – Click the arrow for more – After a few years of mid-table mediocrity, United returned to the Champions League under Sir Bobby Robson and even mounted a surprising title challenge. All of this was done in the famous black and white stripes mixed up with the purple and green logo of new sponsors NTL. It made for a kit well loved by many fans.

Newcastle away kit 2011/12 – The Toon Army have played in some truly awful away kits but this orange number was actually quite stylish. It also coincided with their surprising fifth-placed finish in just their second season after returning to the top-flight.
